What are the benefits of seeking professional help when your relationship is not emotionally healthy anymore
Coping through the thick and thin of a relationship can be difficult.
If you are facing any difficulties in your marriage, know that it’s normal.
But sometimes, even the small, seemingly insignificant issues can lead to major problems like cheating or abuse. So, it’s a good idea to nip them in the bud at the right time.
Fortunately, if you are having troubles with your spouse, you can still fix them by sitting down with a professional couple’s therapist.
So, Can Couples Therapy REALLY Save My Marriage?
The short and sweet answer is a resounding “Yes”.
Studies show an encouraging 70% success rate for relationship therapy. The only condition, of course, is that both parties should be willing to work on the relationship.
A couple’s therapist is a trained professional who knows how to identify, address, and resolve the underlying issues in a marriage. Plus, even when you think your relationship has come to a dead-end, they can make a way for you depending on each case.
More often than not, the root cause of a troubled marriage is the lack of communication or miscommunication. But, the problem is, identifying the cause of miscommunication isn’t easy for the couple. Couples therapy helps you pinpoint and address that cause.
However, often, the stigma attached to therapy keeps couples from trying to fix their marriage through this route. So, if there is an effective solution available, why not benefit from it? After all, it’s your relationship that’s at risk.
Benefits of Couples Therapy
Extensive research and scientific literature show that there are a lot of benefits of couples therapy; let’s talk about a few of them for now:
Impartial Advice: Using their experience and impartial reasoning skills, a counselor will provide impartial advice to both parties. They will also give you tips on how to address the problem areas at home effectively.
An Ideal Environment for Honesty: When it’s just the two of you, being brutally honest can not only be difficult but can also cause further problems.
Therapy offers a safe environment where you can be totally honest. And being honest can help you move past your issues quickly.
Help with the Children: Often, parents have disagreements over how they should raise their children. A counselor can help identify a middle ground.
Helping You Change Your Perspective: It’s hard to see things from your partner’s perspective. Couple’s therapy helps you shift your perspective and realize your own mistakes.
Reignite the Spark: It’s not always the arguments that lead to an impasse in a relationship. Many times, you just need to reconnect with your spouse and deepen the intimacy. A therapist can help you reignite that spark, too.
How to Find a Good Couple's Therapist?
Now that you know that Couples Therapy may be very beneficial to a marriage if both partners should be willing to work on their relationship. What should you consider when searching for the appropriate professional?
Most professionals have a website where you can read a little bit about their expertise and background, while some others (like me) write posts that not only current clients can reflect but you also can sense the style of the therapist. It is not uncommon to find places where you can have your first session free of charge and then you may decide if you want to proceed or not with that professional.
The best way to choose in my humble opinion still the old "mouth referral" from a friend or family member that had a positive experience with a skilled professional and believes you could benefit from it as well.
The important thing is in most cases and depending on the type and intensity of your issues, you can fix them by getting help from a reputable therapist.
